The Wonderment of WonderCon, this weekend!

Stop by booth #924 at this weekend’s WonderCon (in Anaheim, CA, a stone’s throw from Disneyland) and see all the exciting new items we’ll be debuting! Eric Nolen-Weathington will be manning the booth for us this year. And just in time for the con, we’ve gotten a few samples copies of:

Comic Book Creator #1 (Jon B. Cooke’s new follow-up mag to Comic Book Artist)

American Comic Book Chronicles: The 1980s (the next volume in the series of comics history hardcovers, this time by Keith Dallas)

Alter Ego #116 and #117 (#117 won’t be in stores for another 45 days, but we’ve got a few copies)

Back Issue #64 (again, not in stores for a few weeks, but you can be the first to get yours at our booth)

Plugged In! (our new book on comics pros working in the video game industry, due out next week)

This show is perfect for those of you who can’t deal with the massive crowds and expense of Comic-Con every summer (if you can even get a ticket to it anymore), and it’s still a very comics-heavy convention, and plenty large. You will have a great time, guaranteed!

It’s OK, really…

…to like comic books, or LEGO, or Star Wars, or all three, even. The days of hiding your hobby so the other kids (or adults) won’t make fun of you are over, and “geek” is in. So embrace it, like thousands of Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs) have, and check out the new issue of BrickJournal.

BrickJournal #23 (84 full-color pages, $8.95), TwoMorrows’ magazine for LEGO enthusiasts, presents the long-awaited STAR WARS issue! We use the LEGO Force as we spotlight adult top builders and their creations from a long time ago and far, far away, including Jacob Carpenter’s Imperial Star Destroyer (this thing is HUGE!), Mark Kelso’s Invisible Hand, and feature a talk with Simon MacDonald about building Star Wars costume props with LEGO elements. We’ll also look back at the history of the LEGO X-Wing, from its first appearance in 1998 to the current version over ten years later. Plus: there’s our regular feature on minifigure customization by Jared Burks, AFOLs by cartoonist Greg Hyland, more step-by-step “You Can Build It” instructions by Christopher Deck, and other surprises. It’s edited, as always, by my buddy Joe Meno.

You can view preview of the issue at THIS LINK.

The American Comic Book Chronicles is our ambitious new series, where our top authors document each decade of comic book history from the 1940s to present. In the tradition of such groundbreaking history books as The Steranko History of Comics—which informed a generation of fans in the 1970s about the roots of comic books—these full-color hardcovers will compile over 2000 pages of heavily-researched information, in a friendly, searchable year-by-year format.

NOW SHIPPING: Author John Wells leads off with the first of two volumes on the 1960s, covering all the pivotal moments and behind-the-scenes details of comics in the JFK and Beatles era. The book features a year-by-year account of the most significant publications, notable creators, and impactful trends, including: DC Comics’ rebirth of Green Lantern, Hawkman, and other 1940s characters, and the launch of Justice League of America and multiple earths; Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s transformation of superhero comics with the debut of Marvel’s Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Hulk, X-Men, Avengers, and other iconic characters; Batman’s 1960s “new look”; the Blue Beetle’s resurrection and revamp at Charlton Comics; the debut of Creepy #1 from Warren Publishing, which brought horror back to comic book form; the boom of Harvey Comics’ “kid” line or Casper, Richie Rich, and more.

Roy Thomas goes 3-D in the latest ALTER EGO magazine

ALTER EGO magazine is taking a red and green look at all the sensational stereoscopic comics of the 1950s in a special 3-D ISSUE, which is in stores now. Issue #115 of ROY THOMAS’ magazine on comics of the Golden and Silver Ages gives an in-depth feature assembled and annotated by the late RAY (3-D) ZONE just weeks before his recent passing, which features never-before-revealed secrets of the 3-D era. The issue reproduces actual 1950s 3-D art by such industry legends as JOE SIMON and JACK KIRBY, JOE KUBERT, MORT MESKIN, BOB POWELL, HOWARD NOSTRAND, CURT SWAN, WAYNE BORING, JIM MOONEY, SYD SHORES, GEORGE TUSKA and many others. Every copy of Alter Ego #115 comes polybagged with a FREE pair of 3-D glasses, so fans can enjoy the fun visuals (and eye-strain) just as readers did in the 1950s!

The new issue also features an FCA (Fawcett Collectors of America) section on the history of Fawcett Comics, by noted historian P.C. HAMERLINCK (keeper of Shazam! creator C.C. BECK’s archives). Plus, there’s MICHAEL T. GILBERT exploring what lies in Mr. Monster’s Comic Crypt, and BILL SCHELLY documenting comics fandom history, all behind a Captain 3-D cover by JOE SIMON and JACK KIRBY.
