The CBA Magic returns, in COMIC BOOK ARTIST BULLPEN!

COMIC BOOK ARTIST BULLPEN collects every issue of the little-seen labor of love fanzine published in the early 2000s by Jon B. Cooke (editor of today’s Comic Book Creator magazine), just after the original Comic Book Artist ended its TwoMorrows run. Featured are in-depth interviews with some of comics’ major league players, including George Tuska, Fred Hembeck, Terry Beatty, and Frank Bolle—and an amazing all-star tribute to Silver Age great Jack Abel by the Marvel Comics Bullpen and others. That previously unpublished all-comics Abel appreciation (assembled by Rick Parker) includes strips by Joe Kubert, Walter Simonson, Kyle Baker, Marie Severin, Gray Morrow, Alan Weiss, Sergio Aragonés, Mort Todd, Dick Ayers, and many more! Includes the never-released issue #7, a new bonus feature on Jack Kirby‘s unknown 1960s baseball card art, and a 16-page full-color section, all behind a Jack Kirby cover!

John Severin: Two-Fisted Comic Book Artist
160-page FULL-COLOR HARDCOVER – by Greg Biga and Jon B. Cooke
$39.95 cover price
ISBN-13: 978-1-60549-106-6

The spirited biography of one of the most prolific creators in the history of American comics! From a start in 1947 at the Simon & Kirby shop, he co-created the legendary Western strip American Eagle, and became an EC Comics mainstay, working with Harvey Kurtzman on MAD and Two-Fisted Tales. In addition to a 40+ year association with Cracked magazine, his pivotal Marvel Comics work included an extended run inking Herb Trimpe on The Hulk, and teaming with sister Marie Severin to create the definitive comics version of King Kull. Throughout a storied career, he freelanced for virtually every major publisher, and remained a workhorse up ’til his final Dark Horse mini-series at age 89.

Included in this volume is a special “American Eagle” section, an eye-popping art gallery, and extensive personal photos and artifacts (including WWII “Victory Mail” cartoons and handmade greeting cards for his family). Also featured are commentary from over 25 peers gathered just for this book, including Neal Adams, Richard Corben, John Byrne, Russ Heath, Walter Simonson, and many others. Written by Greg Biga and multiple Eisner Award-winner Jon B. Cooke, with an introduction by Howard Chaykin, foreword by Mort Todd, and afterword by Chuck Dixon, this profusely illustrated book celebrates the centennial of the two-fisted artist’s birth!!

The Hardcover Edition sold out just months after its release, so we’ve gone back to press for a limited run in Softcover. Don’t miss this one!

NEW SOFTCOVER EDITION! From the 1940s to the ’70s, Reed Crandall brought a unique and masterful style to American comic art. Using an illustrator’s approach on everything he touched, Crandall gained a reputation as the “artist’s artist” through his skillful interpretations of Golden Age super-heroes Doll Man, The Ray, and Blackhawk (his signature character); horror and sci-fi for the legendary EC Comics line; Warren Publishing’s Creepy, Eerie, and Blazing Combat; the THUNDER Agents and Edgar Rice Burroughs characters; and even Flash Gordon for King Features. Comic art historian Roger Hill has compiled a complete and extensive history of Crandall’s life and career, from his early years and major successes, through his tragic decline and passing in 1982. This full-color softcover includes never-before-seen photos, a wealth of rare and unpublished artwork, and over eighty thousand words of insight into one of the true illustrators of the comics.

American Comic Book Chronicles: The 1950s and The 1990s are back in print!

American Comic Book Chronicles: The 1950s

The 1950s volume documents the era of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, with a year-by-year account of the most significant publications, notable creators, and impactful trends in comics, including EC’s Tales of the Crypt, Mad, Carl Barks’ Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge, re-tooling the Flash in Showcase #4, return of Timely’s Captain America, Human Torch and Sub-Mariner, Fredric Wertham’s anti-comics campaign, and more! Written by the late, great Bill Schelly!

American Comic Book Chronicles: The 1990s

The 1990s volume covers the decade when Marvel Comics sold 8.1 million copies of an issue of the X-Men, saw its superstar creators form their own company, cloned Spider-Man, and went bankrupt. The 1990s was when Superman died, Batman had his back broken, and the runaway success of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman led to DC Comics’ Vertigo line of adult comic books. Relive all the gimmicky covers, skimpy costumes, and mega-crossovers when companies like Image, Valiant and Malibu published million-selling comic books before the industry experienced a shocking and rapid collapse. Written by Keith Dallas and Jason Sacks.
